Memories from Normandy, The Book
If you have a heart for days that never end and stories that never die, I have something to tell you. My second book is out today and holds one of the most important moments of my life and career. Memories from Normandy collects almost 40 of my photos from September of 2009 when I visited France commissioned to record glimpses of what was the Second World War Allied Invasion on D-Day.
This project started, like many others, as a work undertaking. It moved on to galleries as a beautiful exhibit and got the attention of photography curators around the globe. The hero photo, Helmet in Omaha Beach, ended up on the cover of the 70th Anniversary collector’s edition of the book The Longest Day, by Cornelius Ryan.
Today, that picture and many others — the majority of them never seen before — are finally released, printed along with the 76 pages of my new book — that you can buy right now in paperback, hardcover or as a digital download.
Photographing in Normandy was a life-changing experience. Not only for the digital wealth I brought back, but mainly for the memories and thoughts of all those who perished, almost as young as my daughter and son, barely out of their teens. Children made warriors, facing almost certain death so the world we have right could be possible. I brought back a sentiment of gratitude and debt that I can only hope to pay back, in part, by sharing their memories in the way I know.
Memories of Normandy is out thanks to the precious help of my editors Bill Carlson and Denise Gardner. And Valentina Pérez Muskus who assisted me with putting the pieces together. And many others who pushed me to do it when I was busy procrastinating.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did making it. It took me only 12 years.
